Lice Eggs (Nits): Why They're So Hard to Remove and What Actually Works

Nits are the eggs laid by head lice. A single female louse produces 6 to 10 eggs per day over her 30-day lifespan — potentially 200 or more eggs total. Each egg is cemented to an individual hair shaft using a powerful protein-based adhesive that scientists call “nit glue.” This glue is the single biggest reason lice infestations persist after treatment: most products kill some or all of the live lice, but leave the eggs firmly attached to the hair. When those eggs hatch 7 to 10 days later, the infestation restarts.

Understanding nit glue — what it is, why it is so effective, and what can break it down — is the key to eliminating a lice infestation for good. How to Identify Nits in Hair

Nits are small, oval-shaped, and range in color from yellowish-brown (when viable) to white or translucent (after hatching or when no longer viable). They are typically found within 6mm (about ¼ inch) of the scalp, where body heat provides the ideal temperature for incubation.

Nits vs. dandruff: The most reliable way to distinguish nits from dandruff is to try to move them. Dandruff flakes slide easily along the hair shaft or brush off. Nits do not move. They are cemented in place and resist fingernails, standard combs, and even many fine-toothed lice combs. This immovability is not an accident — it is the direct result of nit glue.

Nits vs. hair casts (DEC plugs): Hair casts are white, cylindrical sheaths that slide freely along the hair shaft. They surround the hair completely, while nits are attached to one side. If it slides, it is not a nit.

Viable vs. non-viable nits: A viable nit (one that will hatch) is typically plump, darker in color, and located close to the scalp. An empty nit shell left after hatching is white, flattened, and may be found further from the scalp as the hair has grown out.

What Is Nit Glue?

This is where most lice treatment information — including guidance from major medical websites — falls short.

When a female louse lays an egg, she secretes a sheath of adhesive from her accessory glands that wraps around both the egg and the hair shaft, bonding them together. This adhesive hardens within minutes into an extremely durable cement.

Research published in the Journal of Medical Entomology has identified the composition of this glue: it is a protein-based adhesive, similar in structure to human hair keratin, that forms cross-linked bonds with the hair shaft itself. This is not a superficial attachment. The glue chemically integrates with the hair.

This is why nits are so difficult to remove:

Combing alone is not enough. Even high-quality metal lice combs — which are far more effective than the plastic combs included with OTC products — cannot remove all nits, particularly in thick, curly, or long hair. The glue holds the nit in place with enough force that combing over it often leaves it attached.

Pesticides do not affect it. Permethrin (Nix), pyrethrin (RID), malathion, and other pediculicides target the nervous system of live lice. They have no mechanism of action against the protein cement that bonds eggs to hair. This is why every OTC lice product instructs you to retreat in 7 to 10 days — the manufacturers know their products cannot address the eggs.

Vinegar does not dissolve it. Despite widespread claims online, acetic acid (vinegar) has not been shown in clinical studies to dissolve nit glue sufficiently for reliable removal. A 2004 study published in the Journal of Pediatric Nursing tested vinegar along with five other home remedies and found that none were effective at controlling head lice or preventing eggs from hatching.

Home remedies do not dissolve it. Mayonnaise, coconut oil, olive oil, petroleum jelly, and other suffocation-based remedies may kill some live lice by blocking their breathing spiracles, but they have zero effect on nit glue. The eggs remain attached. The infestation cycle continues.

Why Most Lice Treatments Fail: The Nit Glue Problem

Every year, millions of parents follow this cycle:

1. Discover lice. Buy an OTC product (Nix, RID, or similar).
2. Apply the product. It may kill some live lice — though with permethrin resistance now documented in 48 of 50 U.S. states, even this step often fails.
3. Nits remain glued to the hair, completely unaffected by the treatment.
4. Wait 7 to 10 days as instructed. Nits hatch. New lice emerge.
5. Reapply the product. But the newly hatched lice often carry the same genetic resistance as their parents.
6. Cycle repeats. Parents describe dealing with lice for weeks, sometimes months.

What most parents interpret as “re-infestation” — assuming their child caught lice again from a classmate — is almost always the original infestation cycling through, because the nits were never removed.

The American Academy of Pediatrics notes in their 2022 clinical report on head lice that manual nit removal is an important part of treatment. But they do not address the adhesive mechanism that makes manual removal so difficult, or the products designed to break that adhesive down.

What Actually Removes Nits: Breaking Down the Glue

Because nit glue is a protein-based adhesive, it can be broken down by enzymes — specifically, proteolytic enzymes that target and degrade protein bonds.

This is the same principle behind many biological processes. Digestive enzymes break down protein in food. Wound-care enzymes break down dead tissue. Nit glue dissolving enzymes break down the specific protein cement that lice use to attach their eggs to human hair.

When an enzyme-based nit glue dissolver is applied to the hair, the formula softens and degrades the cement bond. The nit is no longer structurally attached to the hair shaft, and it slides off easily during combing — instead of stubbornly resisting every pass of the comb.

How to Remove Nits From Hair: Step by Step

What you need:

•  An enzyme-based nit glue dissolving formula
•  A high-quality metal lice comb with micro-grooved teeth (not the plastic combs included with OTC products)
•  Good lighting
•  A white paper towel or cloth to wipe the comb on (so you can see what you are removing)

The process:

Step 1: Apply the enzyme nit glue dissolver to dry hair according to product directions. Allow it to sit for the recommended time. The enzymes need time to break down the protein bonds.

Step 2: Starting at the crown, section the hair into small segments using clips or pins. Work methodically so you do not miss areas.

Step 3: Beginning at the scalp, pull the metal lice comb slowly through each section of hair from root to tip. Wipe the comb on the white paper towel after each pass. You should see nits sliding off easily — this is how you know the enzyme formula is working.

Step 4: Continue until you have combed every section of hair. Pay special attention to the areas behind the ears and at the nape of the neck, where lice preferentially lay eggs.

Step 5: Check your work under strong light. Look at each section of hair near the scalp. Any remaining nits should be visible and can be slid off with fingernails now that the glue has been softened.

Step 6: Repeat the process in 7 to 10 days as a precaution, to catch any eggs that may have been missed.

What kills lice eggs?

Most OTC lice treatments (Nix, RID) do not kill lice eggs — they only target live lice, and with limited effectiveness due to widespread pesticide resistance. Prescription treatments like Sklice (ivermectin lotion) and Natroba (spinosad) are more effective against live lice but still do not dissolve the nit glue that holds eggs to hair. Enzyme-based nit glue dissolvers break down the protein adhesive, allowing complete egg removal during combing. This is currently the most reliable approach to eliminating nits.

How do you tell the difference between lice eggs and dandruff?

Try to move it. Dandruff flakes slide easily along the hair shaft or fall off when touched. Nits are cemented to the hair with protein glue and will not move — you cannot flick them off or slide them with your fingers. Nits are also consistently oval-shaped and attached at an angle to the hair shaft, while dandruff flakes are irregular in shape.

Why do lice eggs keep coming back after treatment?

In most cases, the eggs never left. OTC lice treatments do not remove or kill nits. The eggs remain glued to the hair, hatch in 7 to 10 days, and produce a new generation of lice. What appears to be “re-infestation” is usually the original infestation cycling through because the nits were never eliminated.

Can vinegar remove lice eggs?

How long can nits survive off the head?

Nits require the warmth of the human scalp to incubate. Nits that are more than about 6mm from the scalp are unlikely to hatch. However, nits on shed hairs in the environment (pillows, furniture, car seats) can remain viable for up to 10 days if conditions are warm enough. This is why treating the environment is an important part of eliminating an infestation.

Can you feel nits in your hair?

Nits themselves are too small to feel. They are approximately 0.8mm long — roughly the size of a poppy seed. However, in heavy infestations, the sensation of live lice moving on the scalp is noticeable. The itching associated with lice is caused by an allergic reaction to lice saliva, not by the nits.

Do nits always mean you have an active infestation?

Not necessarily. If you find only empty nit shells (white, flattened, located far from the scalp), the infestation may have already resolved. Active infestations are indicated by the presence of viable nits (plump, darker colored, located close to the scalp) and/or live lice. If you find viable nits, assume the infestation is active and treat accordingly.

What is the best lice comb for removing nits?

Metal lice combs with micro-grooved, long teeth are significantly more effective than the small plastic combs included with OTC treatments. The micro-grooved teeth grip nits and pull them from the hair shaft.
